Online Books or oBooks are an experimental model for a new form
of publishing in which the Reader has full control over both the
content and presentation of literature. oBooks abstract the idea
of the book allowing the reader to build story anthologies dynamically
from the internet and choose the final presentation form the book
will take. In effect, the reader becomes both editor and publisher. Check out What is an oBook? for more info.
The first version of the oReader program developed here can produce
concrete printable Adobe .pdf format eBooks from the .obf oBook
files. The reader has control over the fonts, page sizes and margins.
It was designed to test the basic theory, but the .obf format is
easily translatable into any concrete form: .rtf bookfold publications
resembling chapbooks, HTML compilations similar to standalone hypertext
works and can even extend to presentation on PDA's and cellphones.
You can do everything else on your phone now, why not build a book
to read?
Everything here is free. The software and ideas are meant to encourage
the development of this new form. The goal is to establish a community
interested in exploring new techniques of experimental publishing.
Please feel free to join in. Bring your ideas to the Forum or write
